On August 25th, 2035, humanity finally succumbed to its worst enemies: greed and negligence. After its discovery in 1922, a chemical compound named Vitrium was utilized world-wide as an extremely cheap and effective, yet environmentally devastating and unstable power source. Despite constant reports of the dangers that it could pose to ecosystems worldwide, the United States government pushed for the global community to continue widespread usage of vitrium, as a large portion of their economy had become reliant on it. On August 25th, a global record-setting heatwave, with temperatures of up to 210° F, led to hundreds of power plants’ vitrium cooling systems malfunctioning. This led these plants to all spontaneously combust within three days of each other. This horrific event, dubbed The Cataclysm, led to widespread pollution within an extremely short period, at best covering entire nations with toxic clouds, and at worst poisoning the earth of entire continents.
Governments the world over crumbled after this event, and the citizens of the now dead planet had to rebuild. In what used to be the midwest region of the United States, a group of engineers, hunters, and civilians began forming a new society that would prioritize the common good, instead of entrepreneurial business and dangerous hierarchies. This society was named “The Midwestern Union.” However, in what used to be the pacific northwest of the United States, the largest army base in the pre-cataclysm nation began to reform the US government. A fascist, totalitarian nightmare, this nation was named “The United Arms.” These two nations, with opposing goals, ideals, and needs, have been locked in a war for the past 344 years. The world has ended. The planet is dead. The scraps of humanity are falling apart.
